Welcome to Amos!
Our journey began in 1946 when Reverend F. J. Nelson founded St. John C.M.E. Church on Normandie and Jefferson Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Since then, we've grown and expanded, relocating in 1956 and renaming in 1966- God has brought this church and its community a long way! Now located on Washington Blvd., between Cimarron St. and Van Ness Ave., Reverend Dr. Nikki Gilliam is excited to serve as the current pastor of Amos' bright and vibrant congregation!
We believe God is calling us to be leaders in the body of Christ as Kingdom Builders!
We encourage you to come to the throne of God and build His Kingdom with us! At a standard church service, you can expect to sing and dance along during praise & worship with our Music Ministry, turn and talk to your neighbors, and receive a mighty and resonating word and prayer. We are so thankful for the blessings God has given us over the years. We pray that you leave Amos Memorial feeling moved by God's Kingdom and changed by the love and grace of the Holy Spirit!
The Servant Leadership
About our Pastor
Appointed in August 2024, our current pastor is the Reverend Dr. Nikysha Gilliam. An anointed and talented orator, Dr. Gilliam is a multi-hyphenate, God-fearing woman. Her previous pastoral assignment at Phillips Chapel C.M.E. was her first as Senior Pastor, where she ministered for two consecutive years. She received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice from Loyola Marymount University and currently works in many roles at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, CA.
Born her mother’s only child and her father’s oldest, Rev. Dr. Nikysha Gilliam grew up in small-town Pontiac, Michigan. There, she had a village of aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Gilliam grew up in the church and was baptized at age seven. She remembers reading Bible stories and memorizing key scriptures as a child.
Rev. Gilliam earned a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, an M.A. from California State University, in Northridge, California, and most recently an Ed.D. from Loyola Marymount University in Educational Leadership for Social Justice.
She has been an educator in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 20 years in elementary, middle, and high school and was named 2019 LAUSD and LA County Teacher of the Year.
She is the wife of Lawrence Gilliam, and the mother of two children, Lawrence James and Lila Jai Gilliam. She has always believed in Proverbs 22:6 and has encouraged her children to be active in their home church. Reverend Dr. Nikki is on fire for the Lord! We are thankful for her obedience to Christ as she ministers within Amos Memorial C.M.E. Church.
